QUESTION OF THE DAY – 11/03/10

The other day I posted this video that slam poet Jasmine Mans did called Nicki Minaj. The poet let’s out her feelings about Nicki and how she feels that she could better and isn’t empowering young women is really just a Barbie doll. Watch it HERE.

Nicki mania is at a high right now you can’t escape her presence. The album is going to drop later this month so everyone is watching the 1st Lady of Young Money.

QUESTION
Do you think Nicki Minaj is good or bad for hip hop and female hip hop?

On one end I think she’s great she’s bringing excitement to the table. She’s fun to watch and listen to. My biggest gripe with Nicki is, what is she talking about? Half of her songs she just puts words together and they sound cool with the she flips her voice and the accents. But when you sit and actually listen its like what are you talking about really? I could see how people think she’s not doing anything empowering cause she just acts like a doll doesn’t say anything. Interesting thing about Nicki she always has clothes on. She has sex appeal but she isn’t selling sex or using her body to sell us on her. Because when you think of Nicki the first things that come to mind are her zany outfits and her rhymes even if they sometimes make no sense. Is she bad for hip hop? Not at all she’s doing her thing and following the trail that was set by Salt N Pepa and Foxy and Kim and everyone that came before her. All we’ve heard are a bunch of singles, I think we can really pass judgement once her album drops.

As for ladies in rap, Nicki is the leading voice and she should act like a leader. All eyes are on her and it’s her time yes, but what about the other ladies out right now. You see how guys will jump on each others records or older MCs co-sign new guys that are hot. Example Jay-Z and Eminem jumping on the Drake train. The ladies need to do the same not to tear Nicki down but join and create some sorta movement that can truly be empowering and monumental for Hip Hop.

Wow that went on longer than it should have. Either way, what are your thoughts on Nicki?

QUESTION OF THE DAY – 11/01/10

Last week Kanye announced that his EP with Jay-Z is now an album.

QUESTION
Do you think a Kanye West and Jay-Z album will ever see the light of day?

I’ll believe it when I see it. We’re talking about the two biggest egos in rap. Kanye’s may be bigger. I’m skeptical simply because look at their collabo track record. In Kanye’s case there isn’t anything to show. He’s talked about countless collabo albums that have spawned zilch. The Mos West album with Mos Def, the Scarface album produced entirely by Kanye and CRS his group with Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell. CRS recently put out a track but still no word on an actual album. Now let’s look at Mr. Carter. The Murder Inc. album with Ja Rule and DMX never materialized to due to Hov’s ego. Now Jay did put out his “Best Of Both Worlds” albums with R. Kelly but both of those albums had disastrous results due to R. Kelly’s sex tape and leaving their tour.

This could be an amazing album lyrically and production wise. I just don’t see their styles working well together. Recently Kanye has out rapped Jay-Z on their songs together. Check “Run This Town” or even last week’s “Joy”. Kanye’s hyper energy with Jay’s laid back style could work or backfire. On paper this sounds good I guess we’ll just have to wait to see if it ever happens. One thing is for sure the tour is gonna cost a grip.

Lemme know your thoughts.

I found a cool pic. Check it out Continue reading

QUESTION OF THE DAY – 10/27/10

A new season starts for our Toronto Raptors. It is the begining of the Boshless Era.

QUESTION:
How will the Raptors do this season?

I hope they do well, like 8th places in the playoffs. We have a good set of young players with DeRozan and Davis. Plus we have some solid vets with Bargnani and Calderon and some good new additions in Amir Johnson and Leandro Barbosa. The east is pretty stacked but if these guys come together they can do some good. I bleed purple, Laker purple. But I still have a soft spot for our hometown team. So what if Bosh left, his team got handled by the Celtics last night. The Raptors aren’t a one man show. Last time I checked Basketball is a team sport and from the looks of it Toronto has a good team. So good luck and give us a few wins. We don’t need the finals just the playoffs.
