MY THOUGHTS: YOUNG JEEZY TORONTO CONCERT

Last night didn’t go as planned for a lot of people at the Young Jeezy show in Toronto. I was really excited for it. I only saw Jeezy once before at OVO Fest and that was a 30 minute set, so I was hyped for the full Jeezy experience. I won my tickets on Facebook so saving a couple of bucks was a good thing. I got to the show a little after 10. There was no line outside, TONS of police and security. One thing that surprised me about getting in the show was how weak of a search I got and how Sound Academy’s security was so relaxed. I joked about it earlier to some co-workers that Sound Academy is like TSA security. They go crazy violating personal space when patting you down. This time nothing, they didn’t ask to take off shoes or look in my wallet. Walking to the entrance the guys ahead of me even joked about the weak pat down.

Inside the concert was straight hood, it’s a Jeezy show it’s expected. It was busy for 10:30. As soon as I got in there I bolted for the merch table to find nothing. No merch at the Jeezy show? Foul, I mean this guy has one of the best tees to come out in a long time and he had no merch, I came prepared to get a snowman tee or something. No merch sucked but the show goes on. When I got in there with my girlfriend some openers where on, I have no idea who they were they weren’t that great. Speaking of not that great DJ Charlie Brown and Crazy Chris’ DJ and Hosting was quite boring and just annoying. They kept cutting songs and bragging about themselves. The next openers from Ottawa Canadian Currency were pretty good, I never heard of them but they sounded like they came from Atlanta. I liked their energy and stage presence, the crowd not so much they threw drinks on stage. We watched the first bit from the crowd but left after these two girls started arguing and then one just sucker punched the other in the face and ran off. It was pretty funny. Also there was just way to much smoke in the crowd so we decided to go to where the merch table was and watch the show from there. It’s a wicked little riser with a great view of the stage. I found it funny security was letting people smoke weed inside. Normally their kicking people out for that stuff, Sound Academy reaked of weed.

There’s more. Continue reading

MY THOUGHTS: A$AP ROCKY AT OPERA HOUSE JANUARY 27TH 2012

This past Friday A$AP Rocky made his Toronto debut for a sold out show at The Opera House. The building was packed, I took to the balcony to watch the show. The sound was good and you can get a good view of the stage. Shockingly this was a Toronto show that was on time. I arrived at Opera House at quarter to nine and was told the opener was going on at 9:30PM. Which was good cause that meant there was time to go to Dangerous Dan’s for a burger and Poutine. If you ever go to a show at The Opera House I suggest passing by Dangerous Dan’s.

Ok back to the concert, by the time I got back the opening act Raz Fresco was finishing up it was just before 10PM. DJ Neff U held it down playing all sorts of hits to keep the crowd hyped. I have to say it was a pretty patient and relaxed crowd. I was about 2 beers deep at 10:30 and decided it was time for my third. As soon as I hit the bar, who hits the stage A$AP Rocky and A$AP Twelvy. I gotta admit I was surprised they came on so early. They started with “Pretty Flacko” which I missed while getting my 3rd Mill Street Organic. I did get back to my spot in time to see Rocky do his 1st stage dive into the crowd. They weren’t expecting that to happen and it wasn’t going to be the last time Rocky would do it. His security guard was on his toes through out the night. It was funny watching him pluck Rocky out of the crowd.

MY THOUGHTS: RED TAILS

Before we get into my thoughts on Red Tails I want to get one little fact clear, George Lucas did not direct the movie. Anthony Hemingway directed it, Lucas only produced it. So when you’re in line on your way to the theater this weekend and you’re trying to impress your date or friends make sure you tell ‘em that. Now let’s get to business, I’ve always been interested in the Tuskegee Airmen, I saw a movie about them in the 90s and always loved the story about how they over came all of their adversities to be come the legends they are today.

This film isn’t about how the Tuskegee experiment started, when the film begins the Tuskegee Airmen America’s all black fighter squadron is already in Italy during World War 2. They have their own base far from where the white air base is and sub par planes. The group doesn’t let that get them down, they are happy to represent their country and be able to fly, but they know they can do more and they want to show it. Despite their amazing skills, the powers that be believe that black pilots aren’t good enough to fly. Of course they have no choice but to let them get real missions and when they do they excel and complete their missions. Don’t worry I’m not spoiling anything you can wikipedia that.

MY THOUGHTS: EMPIRE STATE OF MIND BY ZACK O’MALLEY-GREENBURG

For Christmas I got Zack O’Malley-Greenburgs Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went from Street Corner to Corner Office. It’s a look into Jay-Z the business man not Jay-Z the rapper. It’s a good idea because if there’s one thing Jay is known for besides his extraordinary rhyming ability it’s his business savvy. The book isn’t a bio, Jay doesn’t have anything to do with it. Which is surprising because after reading the book it seems like something he would have had his hand in. It’s more like a study, a look into how Jay learned to get where he is now.

MY THOUGHTS: BAD TEACHER

Ever see a trailer for a movie and then go to it and it’s exactly what you’d expect it to be? Well that’s Bad Teacher and I liked it. I was sold on the swearing and crazy antics that they showed in the trailer but I thought,it’s gonna be full of lil kids doing stupid things saying a bunch of one-liners. I mean they’re there but this is all Cameron Diaz. She played this part perfectly, her character Ms Halsey is a superficial, mean spirited bitch. There really isn’t anything to like about this person. She’s simply a gold digger, how she became a teacher is a shock to me because she clearly cares nothing for the kids. Her idea of teaching is showing the kids movies of classic school movies. That was one of my favorite parts of the movie, the gag runs through about half it. Have fun naming some of them. She only cares about finding a rich man to settle down with and spend all his money.
